This is the story of Ester Henning, a poor young woman from Mora in the Dalarna province of Sweden. Almost a hundred years ago, she decided to become an artist. She moved to Stockholm, and began a sculpture education during severe hardships. In 1916, she fell ill with schizophrenia. The enrolment journal of the Säter mental hospital states: “Contributing cause of illness: thwarted hopes.” During the next 60 years, Ester Henning lived in mental hospital, and in there, she created a unique collection of pictures. She painted her world: nurses, co-patients, and views from her window.
